Nice tip. Stumbled.
“Sometimes you feel like reinstalling windows Xp”…
What?
When was the last time you FELT LIKE reinstalling Windows…?
“Ohhhhh I’m so bored…. I know! I’ll reinstall Windows!”
Beautiful..Stubled also
What?
When was the last time you FELT LIKE reinstalling Windows…?
About 3 hours ago when it was going so slow i felt like killing my self….. And that answers that.
exactly tom. well said. stil, if it works, it’s a good tip.
@Tom
I’ll try to make it simple for you. When by windows installation gets all shitty and takes ages to boot up and runs slower than you brain apparently does I feel like reinstalling windows.
@Tom : Yes, we all know that how many times we need to reinstall Windows, and this is the solution, that will save much of your time.
@Alex : I am with you, even the latest vista, says it boots faster, but believe, it is again slower then its previous versions, Installing a MAC on this configuration will work much faster…
This will not overwite the registry or delete or replace any critical files will it? Its my understanding that reinstalling windows is to replace newer (possibly) currupt files with the originals, well what if those NEW files are needed and you overwrite them with the original, aren’t you in a sense, screwed?
Agree with jdoh here. The documentation for the /UNATTEND switch says:
“Upgrades your previous version of Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 2000 in unattended Setup mode. All user settings are taken from the previous installation, so no user intervention is required during Setup.”
But I very much doubt that it’s quite as straightforward as the article suggests. I would think that there’s absolutely no way you could possibly guarantee that all your apps / OS settings / drivers, etc will remain working after this process. I’d be extremely wary of doing this if I wanted a known-to-be-stable system and didn’t have the time/technical ability to carry out a proper reinstall if it screwed something up!
So if i have a major spyware infestation is this going to leave all that junk on there?
If it doesn’t delete all that crap i kind of don’t see the point. Or as usual, am i missing something?
Ho there!
Great, but my problem starts BEFORE that! You tell me that I can restore by “logging in to XP” - that’s exactly my problem! I only get the message:
“Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt /system32/hal.dll Please reinstall a copy of this file”
Great - but HOW?
Strangely enough, I’ve put this appeal for help onto ALL the forums I am a member of, and my PC has remained strangely quiet! No info - nothing! Maybe it’s because everybody thinks I must be stupid, and maybe I am! Thankfully I have my 2nd PC to carry on with, but if I’m to use your programme, I need to know the answer first!
I suspect it has something to do with the “BIOS” set up and I am not initiated into these magical circles, but I’m sure somebody out there must be!
Step by step, please - if you have any ideas for me!
(iwmpop) Mr. le Marquis.
@ jdoh : Yes, it will replace all the files, but it will also make sure that they are working. The only problem I faced that my IE7 stopped working, i reinstalled it, and all fine now.
@ jL : Yes, the Help file does say that, but it is working on a Xp system as well. I tried it and use it whenever i have a corrupted files on my system. But it does have its limitations.
@ Chris : Yes, it will, it is only used to reinstall the Windows part, but if in case the system files are infected, they will be replaced, but the spyware will be there, for that use any Anti-Spyware.
@ iwmpop : As i said, it does have its limitations, it will not do everything and anything you want. as your hal(Hardware Abstraction Layer).dll, file is missing you can check for boot.ini file, if it edited or you can also replace it.
ok so yeah someone in this discussion test this and report back again. If it helped speed up your windows etc.
Just insert and boot from the XP CD and do a repair install, this will do the same thing as above but you will not have to login to the corrupt/slow system. The one caveat with both options though is that after reinstalling you will have to download the 50 to 100 meg of patches from MS to get up to date again.
Not sure what all this nonsense is about. If you are going to go through the process of doing what the main article says to do, jee wiz just take a few more minutes and do it right. Whip you partition or drive clean and start fresh. And what it might take another hour to install your personal preferred software. If you want an automated installation then use the utility on the windows xp cd to make an answer file that is saved to a floppy or sumthin that way you dont have to answer all the stupid questions. Run it walk away and have lunch or poke the old lady come back in a half hour and start installing the rest of your software. OR better yet just ghost an image of your drive and if you really want to reinstall windows then then you just drop the image file back on the drive. Dont have Ghost? Sure you can use some sorta P2P and get it…..
will this remove my files, like my docs and such?
Next time you feel like installing Windows, again, install Linux instead.
nice tip.. but I agree with Dee

Stumble for the win.
Stumbled too. I’ll try this on a test laptop sometime when I get around to it. First I gotta install windows on one of them…
@the linux guys,
yea, I run debian on my laptops but to play games and for a lot of specific apps I need a windows installation… and for that, it’s easier to have a win box then to try using wine or vmware or something.
